Home care in Brodheadsville and the West End
Out along Route 209 the distances get real and the agency list gets short. We take cases here, and this page explains how that is possible.
The West End problem
Brodheadsville, Effort, Gilbert, Kunkletown, Saylorsburg, Sciota. Spread out, largely residential, and a long way from the offices most home care agencies operate out of. Families here often call four or five agencies before anyone will even quote — and the ones who say yes send a different person every week, because no caregiver keeps a job that is mostly driving.
Our answer is not a bigger van. It is a longer schedule: twenty hours a week and up with one caregiver assigned to one family. One drive out, a full day's work, the same person every time. That arrangement holds together out here. Scattered short visits do not.
What that looks like day to day
Help getting up, washed and dressed. Transfers and fall prevention — which matters more in older houses with steep stairs and basements. Medication reminders. Meals, laundry, light housekeeping. Groceries in Brodheadsville, and the drive down 209 or over to Lehigh Valley Hospital–Pocono for appointments.
Overnight and live-in care as well. When the nearest family member is forty minutes away on a good day, having someone in the house at night is often the thing that decides whether staying home is possible at all.
Winter out here is its own argument
An unplowed road on the ridge is not an inconvenience, it is isolation. Care arranged in October holds through February. Care that families start looking for in January usually is not care at all — it is a scramble.
If someone in the family is already doing this
Out here this is the rule rather than the exception: a daughter driving over every morning, a neighbour checking in twice a day, a son who cut his hours at work.
Under Pennsylvania's Act 150 and the OBRA waiver, we may be able to hire that person and pay them for the care they are already giving. Not a spouse, legal guardian or power of attorney — but an adult child, parent, sibling, niece, nephew, friend or neighbour.
In the West End it is frequently the arrangement that actually works, because the person already there lives five minutes away and nobody has to drive out from Stroudsburg at seven in the morning. How it works →
Worth knowing: Act 150 and the OBRA waiver are for adults aged 18 through 59 with a physical disability — not for seniors. If you assumed these programs were not for your family because the person is too young, it is exactly the other way around.
